Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) is a highly scalable, secure, and durable object storage service offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS). Here are some key details about AWS S3 buckets:

  1. Scalability:

    • S3 can store virtually unlimited amounts of data and handle millions of requests per second.
    • You can easily scale your storage up or down as your requirements change.
  2. Durability and Availability:

    • S3 is designed for 99.999999999% (11 nines) durability and 99.99% availability of objects over a given year.
    • It stores data redundantly across multiple facilities and is designed to sustain the loss of data in one facility.
  3. Security:

    • S3 supports multiple security features to control access to your data including bucket policies, Access Control Lists (ACLs), and IAM (Identity and Access Management) policies.
    • You can encrypt data at rest using AES-256 encryption or AWS Key Management Service (KMS) managed keys.
  4. Storage Classes:

    • S3 offers different storage classes to optimize costs and performance:
      • S3 Standard: General-purpose storage with high durability, availability, and performance.
      • S3 Intelligent-Tiering: Automatically moves data to the most cost-effective access tier without performance impact.
      • S3 Standard-IA (Infrequent Access): Lower-cost storage for data that is accessed less frequently but requires rapid access when needed.
      • S3 One Zone-IA: Lower-cost option for infrequently accessed data that does not require multiple Availability Zone resilience.
      • S3 Glacier: Very low-cost storage for archival data where retrieval times of several minutes to hours are acceptable.
      • S3 Glacier Deep Archive: Lowest-cost storage for data archiving where retrieval times of 12 hours are acceptable.
  5. Versioning:

    • S3 supports versioning, allowing you to preserve, retrieve, and restore every version of every object stored in a bucket.
    • This helps protect against accidental deletion and provides an audit trail of changes.
  6. Lifecycle Policies:

    • You can define lifecycle policies to automatically transition objects between different storage classes or delete them after a specified time period.
  7. Access Controls:

    • Use bucket policies and IAM policies to control who can access your buckets and objects.
    • Fine-grained access control can be set using ACLs at the object level.

    • S3 supports Transfer Acceleration to optimize data transfers to and from S3 over long distances.
